If something we found does not give us enough satisfaction, it is not something that we were craving for. If we cannot quench our thirst even after drinking a glass of water, what had bothered us certainly was not thirst or thirst alone. We may have wanted getting fully drunk to get rid of weariness or have searched for someone to talk in order to lift out of our loneliness. How can we know what we long for until such craving is fully satisfied? We notice true identity of our desire when we say ‘oh, it is indeed what I have been craving for!’ If we have a desire that feels natural but can’t possibly be fulfilled, the essence of such desire may continue to remain ambiguous.
Since humans cannot escape from the boundary of the earth without putting off humanity, we give up hope and come to have a strong desire at the very moment that we start feeling burdening sorrow. As a human with a strong desire without knowing the end, I am trying to look for true nature of such a desire.
우리가 뭔가를 찾아냈을 때 그것이 우리에게 만족을 주지 못한다면 우리가 갈망하던 대상이 아닌 것이다. 물을 마시고도 진정이 안 된다면 그를 괴롭혔던 것은 갈증이 아니거나 갈증만이 아니었던 게 분명하다. 무료함을 떨칠 만큼 푹 취하고 싶었거나 외로움을 달래 줄 대화 상대를 찾았던 건지 모른다. 우리가 갈망하는 것이 무엇인지는 그 갈망이 채워져 봐야 아는 것 아닌가? 우리 욕망의 정체가 무엇인지 아는 때는 바로 ‘아, 이것이 내가 원하던 거야’라고 말할 때가 아닌가, 자연스럽게 느껴지긴 하는데 도저히 채울 수 없는 욕망이 있다면, 그 욕망의 본질은 계속 모호하게 남아 있지 않을까 싶다.
인간이 인간성을 벗지 않고 이 땅의 경계를 벗어날 수 없기에, 인간이 짊어진 슬픔을 느끼기 시작한 순간 희망은 버리게 되고, 갈망이 남는다. 끝이 어딘지 모를 갈망하는 인간으로 어딘가에 있을 그 실체를 찾아보고자 한다.

-Don’t be greedy, nor be captured by passion
We should be careful not to crush our loving things when we hold them with hot and rough hands. When we think what we are craving for is not something that really exists, we come to remember something we learned from experience; a sentiment. And the sentiment becomes valueless in an instant. Have watchman in your mind to protect that sentiment. Then we may find something; pounding heart, images in the head or sobs filling up our throat. We know it was not something we had craved for.
-탐욕을 부리지 말고 열정에 사로잡히지 않기
뜨겁고 거친 손으로 우리가 사랑하던 것을 품에 안다가 자칫하면 으스러뜨려 죽일 수도 있기에 조심해야 한다. 우리가 갈망하는 것이 실재하는 대상이 아니라는 생각이 들 때는 경험을 통해 배운 것을 기억하게 된다. 그것은 하나의 감정이고 감정은 순식간에 무가치해진다는 점이다. 정신에 파수꾼을 세워 그 감정을 지켜보자. 그러면 뭔가를 발견하게 될지 모른다. 심장의 두근거림, 머릿속의 이미지, 목구멍에 차오르는 흐느낌 같은 것이다. 그것이 우리가 원하던 것이 아니었다는 것을 우린 알고 있다.

-어떤 감정도 자신을 달래지 못한다는 것을 알기
감정을 아무리 세련된 것이라 해도, 또 다른 가짜 권리 청구인 이다. 가짜라는 면에서 누군가 말하는 노골적인 욕정과 다를 바 없다. 그렇다면 이렇게 결론을 내릴 수 있다. 우리가 원하는 것은 자신의 상태가 아니라 ‘타자적 외부적’인 무엇이다. 이 사실을 알면 자신이 그것을 얻을 수 없다는 진실이 참을 만하게 다가올지 모른다. 그것이 ‘타자적 외부적’이어야 한다는 사실은 너무나 큰 이점이기 때문에 그것을 잘 기억하면 그것을 가질 수 없다는 아쉬움을 잊게 될 수 있다. 자신이 가질 수 있었던 그 어떤 것도 이것에 비하면 훨씬 못한 것일 테니 그것들을 갖기보다는 이것을 갈망하는 편이 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 나은 선택일수 있다.
원하는 것이 갖는 것보다 낮다는 것이다. 앞으로 어떤 세계에서 살게 되건 그 세계의 영광은 결국 외양에 있다.
-Be aware that no sentiment can comfort you
Even if the sentiment is so polished, it is another false claimant. It is no different from an obvious carnal desire that people usually say in terms of its falseness. Then, we can come to this conclusion: what we crave for is not our state but something related to ‘exterior otherness’’. If we are aware of such a fact, we may more easily suppress the truth of not being able to satisfy our desire. The fact that what we desire should be ‘exterior otherness’ is such a big advantage that we will be able to forget the sorrow of not gaining what we want easily, as long as we remember such a fact. Anything that we may have been able to gain in the past should be far inferior to this exterior otherness, and longing for it may be a better choice than gaining it. That is, craving is better than gaining. No matter which world we may live in the future, the glory of the world indeed lies in exterior.

-갈망하기를 포기하지 않기
사람들의 우울증이란 칭찬에 대한 오만함과 거부와 관련되어있다_잘랄루-딘 루미(Jalalu’l–Din Rumi), 이슬람의 신비주의자라 불리는 그가 말한 오만함이란, 나르시시즘 또는 우울증에 숨어 있는 일종의 빗나간 자존심이다. 때론 이러한 우울증에 빠진 사람같이 세상의 부정적인 면만을 선택해서 지각하고 감정에 민감히 반응한다. 갈망하기를 포기하지 않고 세상을 다르게 인식하는 방법을 배워나간다면 그 갈망의 끝에서 진정 원하던 그 실체를 만나게 되리라 기대한다. 우리 모두는 삶이라는 드라마에서 대본까지 쓸 수 있다는 환영을 끊임없이 움켜쥔 채 놓지 않으려고 한다. 그래서 우리가 써놓은 대로 또는 바라는 대로 일이 되지 않으면 분노하고 우울해하고 심하면 겁에 질린다. 사실, 인생이란 우리가 벌이는 쇼보다 훨씬 더 크다는 사실을 대다수 사람들은 절대로 순응하지 못한다. 그러나 이런 식으로 순응하지 못하면 배울 수도 없다. 진짜로 무언가를 배워 성장하려면, 예전에 누군가가 “인생에서는 뭔가 다른 것을 계획해놓으면 뜻밖에 엉뚱한 일이 벌어진다”라고 말했듯이, 현실을 받아들여야 한다.
-Don’t give up craving
Depression of the people is related to arrogance and refusal of compliment. Arrogance, according to Jalalu’l–Din Rumi, known as an Islam mystic, is a kind of wrong pride hidden in narcissism or depression. Sometimes, we selectively perceive only the negative side of the world like a person in depression and respond to the sentiment sensitively. We expect if we don’t give up a strong desire and learn how to perceive the world in a different way, we may be able to meet the essence of what we have truly craved for at the end of such a desire. We all refuse to give up a phantom that we may be able to write a script in this life of drama. When life doesn’t flow as we have expected or wanted, we get angry, depressed and in a serious case, get frightened. Most of the people never adapt to the fact that life is a lot bigger than the show we play and perform. Without adaption, however, we cannot learn. If we want to learn a true lesson and grow up, we should accept reality, as somebody in the past has said, “When we plan something in life, we encounter an unexpected happening”.
